Star Wars cracks $1b mark, sets new global box office record

STAR Wars: The Force Awakens has set another new box office record as 2015 draws to a close.

The seventh installment of the sci-fi franchise has surpassed $1b at the box office globally, doing it faster than this year's other big hit Jurassic World.

The film hit the milestone figure in just 12 days, compared to the 13 days it took Jurassic World.

It grossed nearly $250 million in the US alone during its opening weekend.

The film has raked in more than $38.5 million at Australian cinemas.

The film's gross earnings will get another boost when The Force Awakens officially hits cinemas in China on January 9.

There has been so much scrutiny into the revitalised franchise that there have already been spoilers about the upcoming eighth film, due for release in 2017.
