Stars saddle up for event

IT'S that time of year again when the stallions, colts, mares and fillies are fired up and ready to rock Warwick - and not just the equine kind.

The Barastoc National Polocrosse Championships are coming back to Warwick on April 23 to 29, and it's looking just as big as ever.

The event will feature the best riders and their trusty steeds from all over the country, competing in junior to senior categories.

Warwick Polocrosse Club president Les Fraser said Warwick, as host club, and Queensland, as host state, will work in conjunction to put together the "best nationals ever witnessed".

The championships will be held at Morgan Park, which he said was the best field nationally and internationally.

"Morgan Park is the best polocrosse field in Australia and probably even the world," Mr Fraser said.

People will flock from all corners of the country to take part and watch the championships.

About 1200 people have already signed up and Mr Fraser said numbers were still climbing.

"Numbers are comparable to the 2007 nationals," Mr Fraser said.

But this event is not just for the horse enthusiasts.

Tourism in the region is about to experience a boost when the polocrosse folk come to town and Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott said everyone would benefit.

"They're not just here for a week, they're a here for the week before that too," Mrs Vellacott said.

"An event like this benefits the rural produce, horse feed, restaurants, eating - it all comes back to the statement that some businesses around here don't really think they're in the tourism industry but in actual fact they most certainly are."

There are no exact figures as to how much money this event brings to the region's economy, but it is a lot.

So head along to support local riders and marvel in the talent of the most elite athletes and horses from across Australia.
