State battle could be closest on record

POLOCROSSE: The Barastoc Interstate Series at IOR Morgan Park this week is tipped to be the closest on record, according to Queensland Polocrosse Association president Christine Franklin.

There are six teams from Queensland and New South Wales and five from Victoria in a competition that started on Tuesday and will go to Sunday morning when the women's final is played at 8.30am.

With Thursday night's top World Cup games not starting till 6pm, the early focus on Thursday will be on the Barastoc series.

The 3pm men's game on Thursday between Queensland and New South Wales will be at a standard just under the play in the World Cup and it will be the same with the women's game between the same states at 4pm.

The New South Wales women's team includes Sandra Weston who played in the Test series against South Africa two years ago.

In the first Queensland game in the interstate series, the Maroons intermediate women went down 17-10 to New South Wales.

The boys' teams from New South Wales beat Victoria 28-13 on Wednesday and the Blues won the girls' game 14-12.

New South Wales beat Victoria in an intermediate men's game 24-23 in extra time.

On Tuesday, the Victorian men beat New South Wales 21-19. Cory Buys from Victoria was player of the match.

In their first game, the Queensland open women won 19-16 against Victoria with Maroons player Sam Allen judged best player in the last Wednesday interstate game.

Franklin said the Victorians were looking stronger than in recent years.

"It has the potential to be the best Barastoc yet, it looks close in all divisions,” she said.

The only downer is that Western Australia was unable to field teams this year because they were already heading to Queensland with horses for the World Cup. Western Australia has played in recent years.
