State cycling round on July 2-3 in Warwick area
CYCLING: Jesse Kerrison is the series leader heading into round 2 of the Brisbane Camperland Queensland Road Team Series on July 2-3 on the Southern Downs.
Kerrison hails from the Gold Coast but rides for the Giant Rockhampton team.
Last year’s junior world champion Emily Roper won round 1 as part of the Brisbane Camperland women’s team.
Team members filled five of the top six spots in the women’s category in round 1 at Gatton.
Cycling Queensland president Mike Victor said he expected 250 to 300 visitors would be in Warwick for the weekend.
“There will be 18 teams of six men and eight teams of five women” he said.
On the Saturday, the riders will start in East St outside the Big W Distribution Centre and head east to Tannymorel and cycle through Emu Vale and Yangan on the return to Warwick.
The men will complete the 65km circuit twice for a 130km race while the women will negotiate one leg of the course and then do an extra 13km in the Canningvale area for a total distance of 78km.
The women’s race is at 9.30am and the men will start at 12.30pm.
“Riders will cover up to 40 kilometres each hour and we ask area residents on the way to vote to be careful around our cyclists,” he said.
On the second day, the hub for the morning will be at Leslie Park with the women starting at four-minute intervals for a time trial towards Allora and return over a 12km course. The men’s course will be 20km.
The round will finish with an afternoon criterium in the Warwick CBD.
