State fails to drive upgrade
THE Eight Mile intersection failed to make it on to the on the State Government's Queensland Infrastructure Plan - an outline of projects which will be undertaken over the next two decades.
Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg said he was surprised to hear of the omission considering the stretch of road continued to be a "major nightmare".
"I know it's a Commonwealth issue but the State Government will employ the engineers and be crucial in pushing that forward," he said.
"A lot of our issues are road issues, and that's where you need the State Government advocacy to bring them to fruition."
Many of the projects in the plan were subject to federal funding and Mr Springborg said he didn't understand why the Eight Mile couldn't be in the plan under the same condition.
"This plan is cobbled together to make a tired old government look shiny and new just like a bit of a buff with Mr Sheen," he said.
Mayor Ron Bellingham said he hadn't seen the plan - which was released late last week - but was also surprised the Eight Mile intersection hadn't made it in.
"It's a bit disappointing; I know that the state minister (for Local Government, Paul Lucas) is very supportive of it," Cr Bellingham said.
"(The minister) said he was supportive of something being done at that corner.
"I know it's a national issue but I imagine the federal government takes significant notice of recommendations out of Main Roads here"
The Bligh Government mapped out 83 projects crucial to the future of the Darling Downs and the South West Region in the plan - which would be updated annually.
They included the Toowoomba second Range crossing, Warrego Hwy and Surat Basin road upgrades, Toowoomba Transit Network, hospital expansions at Toowoomba, Roma, Charleville and Kingaroy, new police stations, a fire station, kindergartens, a primary school, and TAFE facility.
"It's estimated the Darling Downs-South West Region population will increase by 110,000 people over the next two decades," Ms Bligh said.
"We are determined to deliver infrastructure that anticipates growth.
"It includes projects funded by all three levels of Government, as well as the private sector."
Mr Lucas was contacted by the Daily News for comment but had not replied by the time of publication.
