State player of the year for Freestone player
TABLE TENNIS: Freestone player Aaron Payne has won medals at state and national level and has now been named a Queensland Player of the Year.
Payne plays in Warwick on Monday and Friday mornings at the St Mary's Pavilion and plays fixtures in Toowoomba on Tuesday nights.
He recently competed successfully at the Australian Athletes With a Disability Championships and won bronze in his doubles event and silver in the team event to be awarded Male AWD Player of the Year in Queensland.
Payne took up the sport three years ago and won his first state and national medals in 2015.
He was Queensland AWD table tennis champion at the age of 17 and went on to win a silver medal with Queensland in the teams event at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide in 2015.
He won silver in singles when he went down to the eventual winner from New South Wales in the Games final.
Payne first succeeded at state and national level without a coach but with a lot of encouragement and support from his family.
He is now coached by Peter Ferdinand in Warwick and by state coaches.
While at Warwick State High School he set some state AWD athletics records in the T37 classification and starred in 100m and 200m sprints and the shot put.
He has played for Queensland at school and club level in table tennis and played in national competitions in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne.
Bernadette Mitchell was the second player from the Toowoomba association to win an award when she won Female Player of the Year after winning the Over 30 women's singles and doubles state title.
She also finished runner-up in over-40 singles and won the over-40 mixed state title.
Mitchell is ranked number one in the over 30 and over 40 state lists and was selected to represent Australia at this year's Test match against New Zealand in Christchurch.
