State 'vague' on snake relocation
THE State Government has been vague on its policy on relocation of captured snakes, after readers called the Daily News with concerns about the practice.
The concerns were raised after a large brown snake was caught on Thursday near the Eagle Boys pizza outlet on Albion Street in central Warwick.
Callers following our story were curious to know where captured venomous snakes such as Eastern Browns - which are a protected species - are released.
A spokesman for the Department of Environment said "snake removers" were licensed by the department and operated on a commercial basis.
"The public can contact them directly and contact details are listed in local phone directories," the spokesman said.
"Alternatively, local councils may be able to provide advice."
"Typically, captured snakes are released back into the wild at a location where they are unlikely to cause further problems."
