Gearing up for Queensland Polocrosse Club Championships
POLOCROSSE: Bill Kerr is hoping 450 players will be at the Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve from the middle of next week for the three-day Queensland Polocrosse Club Championships.
The Cunningham Polocrosse Club president has been involved with four state championships and been president for the past year after previously presiding over the club for three years.
"It will be full-on for members this weekend as we prepare the facilities and seven fields," he said.
"We are expecting 50 volunteers from the club to turn up this weekend."
As well as hosting the September 4-6 event, Cunningham will field six open teams and two junior teams at the championships.
Last year, Cunningham won the A-grade mixed and Kerr makes no secret of the fact his club is going for back-to-back titles.
But he isn't giving too much team information away and will only say World Cup player Lauren Cant will be in one of the club's top teams.
The Cunningham club applied to host the carnival this year to coincide with its 60th anniversary.
"We also hosted state championships in our 50th year," he said.
Players will come from as far as Calliope in Central Queensland, Quirindi in New South Wales and Thargomindah to the west.
Kerr tips Tansey to start as favourites for the A-grade open championships.
"All Tansey players are really on fire including World Cup player Trent Collins," he said.
When asked to tip a top four in the open, Kerr went for Tansey, Warwick, Wandoan and Cunningham in no particular order.
He admitted it was a disadvantage from a playing perspective to be hosting the carnival.
"Players go from working in the bar and canteen to cleaning facilities and picking up rubbish to playing their games and umpiring," he said.
"But it is the ultimate to play in the state championships on your home fields. All of the top players will be at their peak as it will be the last weekend selectors will be watching players before naming teams for next year's nationals in Albury in April."
Play will start at 8am each day of September 4-6 titles.
