Stay safe this Easter

FOR two decades Graham Buchner has helped run the Gladfield Driver Reviver and he says people still aren't getting the message, particularly when it comes to speeding.

Over that time the Warwick and District Road Safety Group chairman has seen drivers do some stupid things.

"It frustrates me," the 67-year-old said.

"Everyone is in such a ruddy hurry.

"If you're in a hurry, what do you do - you do speed.

"The faster you go, the longer it takes to stop.

"That's what we've tried to get through to people.

"Slow down, because if you see something coming up you've got a chance to stop safely - otherwise you've got no chance."

The driver reviver station is on the Cunningham Hwy, about 25km north of Warwick.

"We've got a lot of people who don't rest enough and we do see people speeding in the 60kmh zone," he said.

"I get very annoyed at the stupid things I see on our roads."

If people just follow the basic five rules, no speeding, alcohol or drugs, use seat belts, watch fatigue and distraction, that just about embraces all the things underneath it.

"If you don't speed, you have no problem pulling up.

"Consider everyone else and stay safe."

Mr Buchner said people needed to be aware of their limitations.

"We want them all back for next year," he said.

"Don't drive beyond your ability - we are not all cut out to be racing car drivers.

"Distractions can come at a very high cost."

The Fatal Five are the most common killers on Queensland roads and police will be targeting drink driving and drug driving, fatigue, inattention, seatbelt use and speeding these holidays.

Warwick police officer-in-charge Jamie Deacon said officers would be specifically targeting these offences.

"Police want people to arrive safely and we make no apologies for being out in force to make sure that happens," he said.

"People need to remember there will be an increased amount of traffic on the roads as people head off on holidays and to see family for Easter.

"We urge people to take regular breaks, plan their trips and obey the laws and speed limits."

Senior Sergeant Deacon said Operation Easter Road Safety started on Thursday.

"The operation will run to the end of the school holidays," he said.

The Gladfield Driver Reviver is open 24 hours a day until Monday night.
