TWO fires burning in the Stanthorpe region yesterday were a harsh reminder for people to remain vigilant over coming months.

Fire crews attended fires at Dalveen and Thulimbah, with wind gusts creating added work.

It is believed fallen power lines ignited a grass fire at Thulimbah but the blaze was quickly brought under control and extinguished by crews.

At the time of print, trucks were beginning to depart the fire at Dalveen, however some personnel remained and continued to dampen down the area.

No people or properties were threatened by either blaze.

Typically, the danger periods on the bushfire calendar are August, September and October and although they have passed, experts warn we are not yet out of the woods.

Queensland Fire and Rescue volunteer community educator Alan Beaver, said although the fire threat was "not a major problem", he urged people not to become complacent.

"We have had a relatively wet December but it is now starting to dry out," he said.

Mr Beaver said although the temperatures are beginning to rise, humidity was still quite high, alleviating a little of the pressure.

"Although the moisture content is starting to go down, the humidity is still quite high.

"But how long it will stay like that is anyone's guess," he said.

"When relative humidity drops lower than the temperature, we're in trouble."

The experienced fire fighter urged anybody thinking of taking fire precautions to contact their local fire warden or consider options such as grazing, slashing or ploughing.
