Stayers go the distance in Warwick marathon
HARNESS RACING: An exciting day of harness racing graced the turf of Allman Park on Saturday.
Local trainer Richard March had three winners, and one of Queensland's best, Darrel Graham, had a training double, including taking home the Pacing Cup with the talented My Ultimate Fella.
RACE 1 - STEVES STAR ($2.70) took advantage of a pace that would make a snail look like Usain Bolt, outsprinting OLE SUN to claim the first. Favourite MONORAILhad a big task, but showed no dash in the straight.
The trotters ran the 2950m in 4:26:27, with a mile rate of 2:25:5.
RACE 2 - CHEVALS DIAMOND ($9.40) worked to the front for driver Lola Weidemann after jumping cleanly off the stand, and couldn't be run down. CULLEY BACKEY got to within four metres after starting off the 60m handicap, but couldn't run down the leader.
RACE 3 - The most dominant win of the day came from OUR MAJOR DAY ($5), who began well, held the lead, and booted clear turning the bend, scoring by 16.8m to Mattgregor Star.
RACE 4 - CLINTAL DO ($1.60F) looked one of the better bets on the program, and he duly obliged, getting the job done at the short quote.
The Richard March-trained local sat second last in the run, before peeling out three-wide and storming down the outside to nab MASTER MONTANA.
RACE 5 - The Garrard's 2017 Warwick Pacing Cup belonged to MY ULTIMATE FELLA ($2.60F).
The well-performed gelding began well off the mobile, before going on with the job and heading up the field in the back straight.
It was a position he wouldn't relinquish, although there were a few nervous moments towards the conclusion of the race, with outside EPIRUS BOY sprouting wings to just fall short.
RACE 6 - ULTIMAE AD ($5.90) gave Warwick's Richard March a training double, after securing an easy lead with COBLA MADONNA galloping at the start and KIWI SOLDIER content to take a trail.
Favourite THUNDER MAC took the lead around the home bend, before galloping, ultimately getting back into a pace to finish second.
RACE 7 - MACHBINO ($14.70) came into the race as a previous winner on the grass at Allman Park, and that experience came to the fore, as he narrowly defeated DIAMONDSFROMHEAVEN in the last.
A wall of four horses made their way down the home straight, with Machbino fighting off all challenges in a tough victory.
