Steketee targets Bulls call-up

WARWICK paceman Mark Steketee is aiming to make the Queensland Bulls side within the next two years as his career goes from strength to strength.

Steketee took 6-16 off 10 overs in his first bowl for Souths in Brisbane A-grade cricket on Saturday but doesn't rate it as his best performance.

"I bowled some good balls but some bad ones as well," he said.

Five of his victims were caught behind the wicket on the offside and the sixth one bowled.

Steketee said his first aim was to consolidate his A-grade spot at Souths.

"I am aiming to make the Bulls next season or the season after," he said.

He started his campaign at the nationals with one cheap wicket in a victory against ACT yesterday at Bice Oval and will play for Queensland against Tasmania at Park 10 today.

Tomorrow, Queensland plays Western Australia at Kensington Oval before enjoying a rest day on Saturday.

The Queensland team for the Adelaide carnival includes two Bulls rookies.

A strong performance at the nationals in the next 10 days could secure Steketee selection in the Australian under-19 team for the World Cup next season.

"It will be a bonus if I make the Cup team," Steketee said.

"I just want to perform well for Queensland; I can't control whatever happens after that."

Steketee is younger than many of the players he is coming up against in Adelaide. He will turn 18 next week.

Due to his success at U17 and U19 level for Queensland and at country level, Steketee has just been presented with the Bill Brown Medal for Queensland Youth Cricketer of the Year.

The medal is named after Test opening batsman Bill Brown who was in the Invincibles team which toured England under Australian captain Sir Donald Bradman in 1948.
