Intoxicated and armed with pitchfork lands fighter in prison

INTOXICATED and armed with a pitchfork, Anthony John Hutchinson was ready to fight.

But joining in a fight on January 29 that "erupted over something stupid" led to the 21-year-old being sentenced to nine months' jail yesterday.

Police prosecutor Matthew Heelan told Rockhampton Magistrates Court how a group of friends were at an Alma St address when Hutchinson's brother came in, but was escorted back outside by one of the females.

It was there that Hutchinson and others were waiting outside in the dark, armed with metal poles and pieces of wood, and the female yelled out for help.

Help arrived armed with tent poles, bats and bits of wood, and the ensuing fight spilled into Cambridge St towards Denison St.

Hutchinson and his associates left, only to return to the Alma St address, this time armed with pitchforks, axes and machetes.

When Hutchinson used a pitchfork to smash through a gate at the house, he stabbed a man in the stomach, but didn't break the skin.

The fight was broken up by news that police had been called and were on their way.

During the armed fracas, one man received a wound to his right arm needing four stitches, as well as cuts, abrasions and bruises to his arms and stomach.

Hutchinson pleaded guilty to the charge, and in sentencing, Magistrate Cameron Press said a term of imprisonment was warranted.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm while armed or in company, Hutchinson is eligible for parole on May 25. Hutchinson was also ordered to pay $800 compensation to the male victim.
