THE PIG and calf sale at Lyons St each week always attracts quite a few people.

Some of these are regulars, some new faces, and some just coming along to try and score a bargain.

Among the crowd this week was Geoff Dawson, owner of Stocks Produce store in Blacksoil, Ipswich.

"I'm come here every week looking for hens and roosters to sell at the produce store down at Ipswich," he said.

"I buy poultry here and at the poultry auction on Saturdays at the Showgrounds because there is more variety."

Sussex, rhode island reds and plymouth rocks are just some of the hen breeds Mr Dawson said he would come looking for in Warwick.

"I'll sometimes buy goats and lambs here as well," he said.

"Or I might go for a look (at the sheep sale), I like to buy young ewes and lambs."

Starting out as a lucerne farmer, Mr Dawson has spent most of his life on the land and has owned his produce store for about 25 years.

"The market hasn't been too bad lately," he said.

"With the produce store it's just about trying to keep the quality up.

"For example, the light sussex, which is white and black, is a breed that is easy to sell, but hard to find.

"I come here looking for them, they have different pure bred hens at the weekend auction."

The agriculture industry broadly is set to suffer drought as an El Nino weather system has been announced for the region.

But Mr Dawson was not too concerned by what drought could mean for his business.

"It's hard to say, really," he said. "For me, I prefer dry - having a produce store it means customers have to buy from us."
