Storm rips through Rose City

A WILD, albeit short-lived, storm thrashed the Rose City on Saturday afternoon, scattering debris all over the town.

The skies turned black shortly before 2pm and it wasn't long before the town was hit with gale-force winds and torrential rain.

Lightning lit up the sky intermittently and trees shook violently under the force of the storm's wind.

Within about 20 minutes the storm had subsided but left a mess in its wake.

Large tree branches littered many roads and empty wheelie bins had been thrust into the streets.

Residents took to social networking sites to report foreign objects caught up in the winds flying past their homes, including a dog bed and even a trampoline.

Access to Guy and Albion Sts was cut temporarily by fallen tree branches and police were on hand to redirect traffic until the debris could be cleared.

Outside of Warwick, it was a similar story.

In Inglewood a fallen tree caused havoc for motorists, when it cut road access in Wallace Dr.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service was on standby on the Warwick/Killarney Rd at Loch Lomond after a tree fell on a powerline at 3pm on Saturday.

The tree was burning on the line before the fire went out but fortunately nearby grass did not catch fire.

A powerline also reportedly came off a power pole near the Caltex service station, leaving many residents without power for the majority of the afternoon and evening.

Ergon Energy spokesman Kerry White said crews spent Saturday evening restoring power severed by the storm's winds.

The disruptions were widespread and left about 5000 customers without power.

"Strong winds were thought to be a key factor behind disruptions to electricity supply which kept Ergon Energy crews busy in the Pratten, Yangan and Allora areas, near Warwick on Saturday," Mr White said.

"About 2.15pm, 1520 customers were affected in the Pratten area when trees blew over an 11,000 volt feeder line, with supply restored by about 3.30pm.

"Around the same time 1850 customers in the Goomburra-Maryvale area and 1580 customers in the Yangan-Freestone area were without power after a pole carrying a major feeder line to the district came down."

Mr White said power was restored to the Goomburra-Maryvale area by 6pm on Saturday and to the other area about 8.30pm, but Ergon Energy crews worked until after midnight replacing the damaged pole.

The effects of the storm were still being felt yesterday, particularly on the roads, with Warwick police directing traffic at the corner of Fitzroy and Albion Sts between 8am and 9am as the traffic lights were straightened after being damaged by the storm activity on Saturday.
