Strong calf prices in vendor’s favour at Warwick sale
CALF prices might be high, but that did not deter prospective buyers from checking out what was on offer this week at the Warwick Pig and Calf sale.
The usual preloved bric-a-brac was on display at the auctions but it was the calves that brought the crowd to the weekly Warwick sales.
McDougall and Sons auctioneer David McIvor said strong calf prices had remained high again this week, reflecting a strong demand from buyers.
"In line with other markets, calf prices have definitely been in the vendor's favour," he said.
"It's a reflection on the market interest."
Mr McIvor said the Warwick market had seen a complete turnaround in the second half of the year.
"We've had a reasonable season this year - a few storms have helped," he said.
"Earlier in the year the cattle market was considerably lower, but the second half of the year saw a rising market."
With only three sales left for the year, the auctions have been attracting increasing numbers each week.
Even larger crowds are expected to flock to the weekly sales as Christmas approaches, with plenty of bargains to be found at the bric-a-brac auctions as well as the animal sales.
"We'll see a few more lookers come through and bigger crowds of families once school holidays kick in," Mr McIvor said.
"Throughout the year we've been attracting a broader interest and strong crowd numbers."
The final pig and calf sale of the year will be held on December 16, with the market to re-open next year for the first sale on January 6.
