Strong cup support for massive weekend for Redbacks

AUSSIE RULES: Warwick Redbacks president Ben Lubben is hoping to start a return to the glory days at the Cardinal Cup at Warwick Credit Union Oval this weekend.

The Cardinal Cup was last played in Warwick in 2014 and the Redbacks won the cup before winning the Anzac Day trophy, minor premiership and premiership in division 1 in the same season.

Warwick also had 12 players in the Darling Downs Country representative side in 2014.

"I want to return to the glory days within the next two years," Lubben said.

Games start at 9am Saturday and Warwick has luckily been drawn to play its four games on Saturday so players in the Rosewood Redbacks teams in the Warwick cricket preliminary final won't have a clash on Sunday.

"Other than the cricketers, the rest of the Redbacks players will be at the games on Sunday and the presentations," Lubben said.

Last season, Warwick went down to Dalby in the division 2 grand final but there is only one competition this season.

Tyhe Clarkson and Shane Iles played for University last season and won a division 1 premiership but with Warwick in division 1 again they will return to the red and blue of Warwick this season.

Brendan Iles is a three-time winner of the Holman Medal for fairest and best in division 1 and will play when work commitments allow.

Tony Chandler is planning to retire but not before playing this weekend in the Cardinal Cup.

Mark Mills retired late last season but Lubber said he was still helping out with the club.

Cardinal Cup organiser Colin Pope said the event would not be possible without the support of sponsors.

Sponsor Karen Usher, from Talk'n Heads, said it was good for businesses to get behind local clubs and the community.

"I like to see all the footy codes successful, people support our businesses and we can give back to clubs," Usher said.

There will be a representative of AFL Queensland at the carnival.

The first game will be at 9am Saturday between Warwick and Jimboomba Redbacks.

In the first nine years of the Cardinal Cup, Redbacks teams have won seven times, four by Jimboomba and three by Warwick. This year is the second time the winner will be determined by number of wins so the first game is crucial to the chances of both teams.
