ATHLETICS: Scots PGC College student Will Gilmore is aiming to win his first national medal this season.

Gilmore is one of 32 athletes from the Southern Downs who have qualified to represent Darling Downs in the state championships in October.

The regional athletics team was named after times and distances for individual athletes were compared to qualifying times.

He won gold medals in 15 years discus and hammer at the regional championships at Hamilton Oval in Warwick. Gilmore has already improved on last year when he was first in discus and second in hammer at the regionals.

His personal best is just more than 60m for both throws. Last year he was 10th in hammer at the nationals.

"My aim is to win a medal at the nationals,” Gilmore said. He hails from Allora and trains two to three times a week. He was third in butterfly at last year's state swimming and is currently in Brisbane training for the nationals in rugby.

A flanker, Gilmore is part of the Queensland Blue team, one of three Maroons teams playing in the nationals which start at Ballymore tomorrow.
