Strong strokes at state sprint
Swimming: A total of 11 Stanthorpe Swimming Club swimmers represented the region at the RMHC Queensland 2017 State Sprints.
The group headed to Brisbane on the weekend of February 18 and 19 to compete.
In their first appearance at state sprints, William and Isaac Kay, Oska and Bonnie Zappa, Hannah McMeniman, Bridgette Kay and Brooke O'Brien were joined by fellow swimmers Ben Armbruster, Ella Wishart, Isabel Kay and Aliesha Rogers for the two-day meet, which attracted over 1800 swimmers from across the state from nine years to the open age groups.
At this meet, swimmers needed to qualify for any of the 4 x 50m events in their age group to be able to attend, with increasingly difficult qualifying times each year.
Nearly all of the swimmers posted new personal best times for their swims over the weekend.
Ben Armbruster had a dead heat for 10th place in the 14-year-old boys 50m backstroke.
This then required a swim-off, where only the two swimmers race for a place in the final.
Ben was successful in the swim off, and swam in the final where he placed seventh in the state in this event.
The club is proud of all of its swimmers and their positive attitude towards their swimming and their support for each other over the weekend.
A huge thank you to coach Gail Smail for her tireless efforts over the weekend with our swimmers.
Thanks also to all of the parents who came and cheered as well.
