Water and sewerage rebate boost for Warwick seniors
STRUGGLING senior citizens groups in Warwick, Killarney and Allora will be given a 50% rebate from the council on water and sewerage charges.
The Warwick Senior Citizens Association put in a request for their water and sewerage charges to be waived by the council.
In 2014/15 the seniors paid $3300 to the council, going up to $3890 in 2015/16.
There was widespread support for the seniors, with councillors suggesting a rebate was the best option.
Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley said the seniors groups needed support.
"It's important we see the viability of these groups into the future," he said.
"The seniors in Warwick spend $600 a week to keep their group going."
Cr Jamie Mackenzie agreed.
"We're not going to bust the budget giving a rebate to these three very worthy groups," he said. "We're doing this to offer our seniors a boost."
Cr Denise Ingram wasn't as supportive of the idea.
"I'm wondering if the Deputy Mayor would extend that offer to CWA groups," she said.
But the Deputy Mayor disagreed, stating the CWA groups were different because they owned their own buildings.
"The CWA ladies would be the first to tell us if they were struggling," he said.
"If they want to bring their concerns to council they are welcome."
The Warwick Senior Citizens said the $1900 rebate would be a big help.
"We've just had to pay our insurances - $2800 for the year," President Joe Owens said.
"We really do appreciate the support from the council."
Stanthorpe Senior Citizens don't pay water or sewerage charges.
The rebates are expected to cost the council as much as $4000.
