Clifton stud heifer show entries open

WITH show season fast upon the Southern Downs, the Clifton Show Society is inviting young exhibitors from across the region to showcase their animals at the All Breeds Stud Heifer Show.

The first All Breeds Stud Heifer show was held in 2006 with about 80 heifers.

Clifton Show secretary Adele Saville said the event, to be held this year on Friday, February 12, had since gathered at least 50 heifers to each competition.

"We have had over 100 heifers entered in this event," Mrs Saville said.

"It has become popular with the exhibitors and spectators.

"Many schools who have an ag section have become keen exhibitors in this event."

With youth involvement a focus for the show society, Mrs Saville said the heifer show was an opportunity for young cattle producers to exhibit their breed of choice.

"It is another section for the stud cattle exhibitors to showcase their cattle at the local show as they are also on show at the Saturday stud cattle section," Mrs Saville said.

"It is a chance for the young people to become involved with the stud cattle section and learn to parade cattle.

"All breeds are judged together in their age bracket for the heifer show, Saturday they are judged in there own breed class."

Judging will start at 6pm on the Friday under the lights in the main arena.

Classes for the heifers start from under nine months and continue to under 20 months.

"Heifers entered for the Friday night must be entered in the Saturday stud cattle classes as well," Mrs Saville said.

"Parader trophies and money will be given in four class - under-12, under-15, under-18 and under-25.

"The parader does not have to be the owner of the heifer but the parader and owner will both be awarded."

"A junior heifer winner and senior heifer winner are first selected and then an overall grand champion is announced."

The Clifton Show is as old as Australia itself, with the first show held at the Recreation Reserve in 1901.

Mrs Saville said the show was now well established as a great place for local producers to reveal their hard work and sponsors to reach out to exhibitors.

"On the night the sponsors of the event are given the opportunity to present vouchers and to tell people about their product, where they can be located, and the exhibitors can meet the event sponsors," she said.

The cost of entry is just $7 and nominations close on Tuesday, February 9.
