Students design award-winning app to make moving school easy
IMAGINE for a moment that you are a tender-footed Year 6 student who is about to graduate from a small rural primary school.
Until recently there was maybe 20 students and one or two teachers in your whole school and now you're moving on to high school.
There'll be hundred of students and many different teachers. There'll a strange routine of moving classrooms through the day and the pressure of sharing a playground with the really big kids.
Combating the anxiety of this transition was the motivation behind a mobile app that won Clifton State High School second place in the Telstra Technology Awards this week.
The Clifton State High School team consisted of Lauren Smith and Lexie Mitchell and they challenged to develop and present a concept for a new technology and develop a prototype.
Their idea was an app that gives future students a taste of the school. It hosts virtual tours, tuck-shop lists and heap of video and live streaming options.
The schools STEM co-ordinator, Angela Campbell was overjoyed by the win.
"They were a fabulous, they were nervous beforehand but it all just went smooth,” Ms Campbell said.
"It was a flawless presentation.”
The app has generated a lot of interest in the wider community and the school is looking into launching it as a viable product.
"We are looking at its cost effectiveness because we think it's a good product,” Ms Campbell said.
"Anything that can make it easier for students to move into high school is a good thing.”
