Students get tools for life
WARWICK State High School's Mount Gordon campus is undergoing renovations in order to welcome a new classroom of students next term.
The campus will be home for a combined Year 8 and 9 class of 15 students for the next six months.
All students involved in the program are experiencing difficulties at school and a have a history of school refusal, behavioural and/or social problems.
It is the school's proactive way of dealing with an increase in the number of juniors with behavioural problems.
Warwick State High School teacher Mark Fowler is looking forward to working with the boys and regional behavioural management specialist Andrew Jones.
"I've always wanted to get into the behavioural management side of things," he said.
"This is something I can do that will help these young blokes.
"We want a future for them."
The Mount Gordon campus is being upgraded to include a new kitchen, computer lab, two chill-out rooms and a classroom.
"School will start here at 8.30am and breakfast will be provided for them," Mr Fowler said.
"We will cover literacy, numeracy and SOSE. The idea is to lift their literacy, self-esteem and numeracy.
"We hope to transition them back into the main school."
All students will be given a tool belt and several tools for the six months. If they complete the course they will be able to keep it.
Mr Fowler said they were looking for sponsorship and donations from the community including high visibility gear, steel-cap boots and foodstuffs.
To make donations phone Judy Davidson at Warwick State High School on 4666 9222.
