Students learn of medieval practices
YEAR 8 and 9 students at The School of Total Education enjoyed a talk and demonstration this week on medieval history, arranged by Judy Funder.
The four presenters gave information about the role of the medieval shaman and medicine.
They also brought along handcrafted articles such as metal scissors, cutlery and other surgical items relating to the historical era.
Many herbal medicines were also on display.
The presenters explained to students how the items worked in those far off days.
This piqued much interest, even the olden days "deodorant".
This included sweet smelling oils and other liquids.
An impressive display of ancient weaponry included wooden shields, metal armour and chain mail.
A large number of authentic swords were also examined.
These captured strong interest, especially from the male section of the audience.
The students had many questions and enjoyed the informative answers.
The visit finished with a short display of "jousting".
The metal helmets and swift defences all paid off for the combatants.
Teacher Matthew Bradshaw said many of the artefacts shown were referenced in a novel that the children had been reading in class, The Sea of Troll, by Nancy Farmer.
