Students ready to ride
HIGH School students from across the district are invited to take part in a unique rodeo program.
Now celebrating its 14th year, the program was the first of its kind, teaching high school students the intricacies of rodeo events.
A spokeswoman said the program was open to any students from Years 7 to 12.
The program, which is now run under the APRA umbrella, utilises the Heritage Centre indoor rodeo arena and the Warwick Showgrounds.
The events alternate each week, with horsemanship events starting today at the Warwick Showgrounds.
Steer/bull riding events are taught at the Heritage Centre the following week.
Organisers said the safety of the students and the welfare of the stock was paramount.
“We have only had one reported incident in the 14 years the program has been running,” a spokeswoman said. “We use all the proper safety equipment and make sure the student is matched with the right beast for the level.”
APRA office manager Karen Burraston said the students had opportunities through the heritage centre to showcase their skills.
“The students participate in demonstrations for the heritage centre throughout the year,” she said. “We have about 50 New Zealand rodeo people coming to see a demonstration in March. The kids are also able to compete in a bull ride on April 15.”
Savannah Halley is looking forward to her first year in the program.
“I wanted to do more with my horses – it was an opportunity to learn more and become a better rider,” she said.
Parent Gale Godson said the program was a great idea.
“They learn so much,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to learn and go on to bigger and better things.”
Organisers said there were looking forward to a visit by Queensland Weekender in March.
