Sunflowers bring tourist boom to Southern Downs
SUNFLOWERS have finally been spotted on the Southern Downs.
It's been a late season for the blooms, but a field on the New England Highway about one kilometre north of Glengallan Homestead has just started to flourish.
The tardiness hasn't deterred interest from around the state in the sunflowers, as the Warwick Visitor Information Centre has had its busiest year fielding phone calls about the blooms.
Volunteer Gerda Brack said the centre received between 50 and 100 phone calls every day about the sunflowers.
Over the Australia Day long weekend, about 270 calls were made to the centre about the blooms.
"Its just crazy this year, I've been there 14 years now and we've had so many inquiries each week,” Gerda said.
"It's grown over time but this year it's a boom.”
Gerda said the sunflowers had better media exposure this year, as many visitors reported hearing about the fields on the news in Brisbane.
"I think it's brilliant, it brings more people to our region,” she said.
"They just love the flowers, I think because they're a happy face and the yellow is just beautiful.”
Earlier blooms at Felton and Cambooya have now turned to seed, but Gerda said a patch had popped up on Rickert Rd, Nobby.
She is hopeful more patches will bloom around Warwick and Freestone in the coming month.
Visitors are warned to be careful around the flowers.
Gerda said the centre had heard reports of visitors trampling paddocks.
"Every year it's been the same, we hear people saying they're pulling out plants and taking them home,” she said.
"We've just got to tell them not to jump the fence and be very careful because it's the farmers' livelihood.”
