Super sprint series keeps growing in popularity

MORGAN Park hummed with the second round of the C series of the Queensland Super Sprint Series at the weekend.

Dozens of competitors travelled to Warwick from around southeast Queensland and beyond to participate in a series that has grown phenomenally since its inception in 2000.

With more than 350 registered competitors, the sprint series is now divided into three separate equal series to accommodate the number of drivers.

Warwick District Sporting Car Club's Michael Reynolds said the club devised the series and ran it throughout the year.

"Each of the A, B and C series have four rounds per year and we also run a state championship sprint series in late October to find the best of the best driver from the year's competitions,” he said.

"The quality or standard throughout the series doesn't differ from one to the other.”

Reynolds said he referred to sprint racing as gentleman's racing, as competitors were more racing the clock and themselves than other drivers.

"In car racing, there's bound to be cars bumping each other but none of us are keen to damage our vehicles, so it's a much more user-friendly way of racing.

"The cars go out in groups of eight with a few seconds breaking them all up, so if somebody catches you, drivers tend to let them pass.

"Ideally you want open and clear track in front of you anyway.”

Reynolds said the weekend's competition had gone off without incident.

"Everyone had a ball,” he said.

"And there were more than 60 still there on Sunday for the presentations, which is a record and a really good sign that people are excited about the competition and are keen to make the most of the weekend.”

Spectator entry is free to Queensland Super Sprint Series events and volunteers are more than welcome.
