Superbikes set to thrill fans on Warwick weekend

MOTORSPORT: The support of the town of Warwick for the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championships has earned praise from Motorcycling Australia's operations and events director Martin Port.

"ASBK is excited and proud to return to Morgan Park Raceway this weekend for the third consecutive year in 2017,” Port said.

"The whole town really gets behind the race and event, creating a palpable, electric atmosphere around town.

"We would like to praise the recent hard work and commitment of Morgan Park Raceway management in resurfacing the track.”

The Motorcycle Sportsmen of Queensland is bringing the event to Warwick for a third time.

There will be practice on Friday then action all weekend.

Riders to watch

Troy Herfoss

Crankt Protein Honda Racing Team's Herfoss is the reigning ASBK champion and has the target on his back this season. The 30-year-old has had a colourful career not just on the road race scene. He has been the Australian Supermoto Champion, multiple AMA Supermoto Champion, X Games Silver medallist, Australian Supersport Champion and two-times ASBK Champion. He leads the series.

Wayne Maxwell

Victorian and Yamaha Racing Team rider Maxwell is a veteran of the road racing scene. The 34-year-old is one of the in-form riders and went fastest in official ASBK testing. He won the championship in 2013.

Robbie Bugden

Bugden has spent the past 10 years on factory superbikes all over the world and is second in the championship.

The 36-year-old rides for Kawasaki BC performance team in the ASBK.

Bugden has raced in England, France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia and China and achievements include being a five-time New Zealand Superbike Championship win. Bugden is from Brisbane.

Josh Waters

The Team Suzuki ECSTAR rider from Mildura is a two-time ASBK champion. Waters left the series at the conclusion of the 2012 season after clinching his second overall championship crown to compete full-time in the coveted British Superbike Championship (BSB) between 2013 and 2015. His time in the BSB returned mixed results, the highlight being a win at Brands Hatch in 2014.

Waters has been back in the ASBK for the past two seasons and had two wins at the last round at Hidden Valley Raceway.

Daniel Falzon

The 23-year-old has been one of the breakthrough riders in 2017. Falzon took a clean sweep in the opening round of ASBK/Phillip Island Championship with three wins.

Falzon has credibility for leading the championship to the halfway mark on a privateer bike against the mighty factory teams. He is now in third place.

Oli Bayliss

The son of three-times world superbike champion Troy Bayliss, the 13-year-old is the youngest of Troy and his wife Kim's three children. Oli took his first ASBK win at the last race at Hidden Valley Raceway and is competing in the supersport 300cc class. He is likely to be a frontrunner in Warwick on a Kawasaki.
