Supercars fire back over pit lane claims

MOTORSPORT: Supercars has hit back at suggestions the system used to determine a crucial pit lane speeding penalty handed to Scott McLaughlin in the final race of the 2017 season was in error.

McLaughlin (pictured) was leading the Newcastle 500 when he was pinged for speeding at the entry to pit lane on his first pit stop. The penalty triggered a chain of events that would result in rival Jamie Whincup clinching a record seventh Supercars crown.

DJR Team Penske revealed this week it will meet with representatives from Supercars next Monday to review the penalty as none of their telemetry data shows McLaughlin violating the 40km/h speed limit.

Supercars released a statement responding to suggestions the system used to measure speed at pit entry was in error.

Pit lane entry speed is measured by a timing loop across the first five metres of pit lane, measuring the time it takes for a car to pass between and determining an average speed.

"The Dorian timing system is a foolproof, point-to-point system with an accuracy to 1/10,000 of a second,” a statement from Supercars said.

"As a fixed system with a time to distance calculation, the data is 100 per cent accurate.”

"For the complete avoidance of any doubt, there was no error.”

McLaughlin, teammate Fabian Coulthard and Dale Wood were all pinged for speeding at pit entry on their first stops.
