Support swells for transgender community after murder

BRISBANE'S peak transgender advocacy group had its only government funding - $500 a year to help pay for car registration - cut just weeks after the Newman government took office.

It's one of the many struggles within the transgender community that have come to light in the wake of the tragic murder of Mayang Prasetyo at Teneriffe.

President of the Australian Transgender Support Association of Queensland Gina Mather said she had been overwhelmed by the outrage expressed by the general public on Ms Prasetyo's behalf after she was described as a "she-male" on the front page of Tuesday's Courier-Mail.

A change.org petition demanding an apology had attracted more than 24,000 signatures on Wednesday night.

"I do believe this is the first time I've ever experienced such a massive, massive turn-out in regards to support for Mayang."
