Surfer Peter Maynard's family facing return without him

THE family of missing Sunshine Coast surfer Peter Maynard are reluctantly planning to leave the area and fly home.

His wife Kylie, brother John Maynard and his mother travelled to the island of Nusa Lembongan last week but now plan to return to Australia on Thursday night, the ABC reported.

Mr Maynard went missing on August 27 and a day later the broken front half of his surfboard was found at the Lembongan surfing break Shipwrecks.

Since then there has been no sign of the 45-year-old father of three.

"We're still clinging to a glimmer of hope that miracles really do happen," John Maynard told the ABC.

"It's a tough decision - how long do you stay, how much more can you do?

"Obviously we'd like some sort of new information to come to hand before that happens [leaving Bali] to give us all a sense of closure [so we can] get on with our lives.

"We've also obviously got commitments back home to our own families and children and at some point we've got to make that really difficult decision to come home."
