Surprise loss for Gilmore in Brazil

STEPHANIE Gilmore is not riding the crest of a wave after suffering a surprise loss in the first round of the Billabong Rio Pro in Brazil.

The Australian, who tops the standings in the race for the ASP Women's World Title, was relegated to round two after Hawaiian wildcard Alessa Quizon won their heat.

In the men's draw, Australians Julian Wilson, Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Adrian Buchan and Mick Fanning all advanced directly to round three after winning their round one heats.
