Suspicious device detonated in North Rockhampton

A DAY of drama in Norman Gardens ended with a small bang yesterday afternoon.

The discovery of a "suspicious item" near a fence on Yaamba Rd about 9.15am led to road closures, traffic diversions and police cordons.

A handful of nearby businesses, including hardware giant Masters, furniture store Super Amart and the Caltex Truckstop, were evacuated as police worked to determine what the device was.

Traffic was diverted as Yaamba Rd between Farm and Carlton Sts was blocked off.

Specialist police, including members of the Explosive Response Ordnance Response Team, arrived on site to examine the item.

They moved it to nearby scrub land where it underwent further examination, including x-ray scans.

An emergent situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act was declared about 3.15pm.

The device was eventually destroyed by a controlled detonation just after 4pm.

The emergent situation was revoked at 4.20pm and road closures and police cordons were removed.

Police investigations determined that the item was not dangerous.

This incident follows the controlled detonation of a suspicious device in Townsville on Saturday.

That object was found in a rubbish bin in a park at Heatley about 11.30am.

An emergency situation was declared and specialist police made the decision to blow up the device.
