Swimmers’ strong chance of winning championship
SWIMMING: A strong contingent of swimmers from the Southern Downs are looking to stamp their ground at this Saturday’s Country Championship in Dalby.
It won’t be the first time that Allora Swimming Club head coach Andrew Fidge will send swimmers to the meet, with swimmers racing for more than individual age champion trophies.
“The Country Champs are a really big meet across the Darling Downs because all clubs from across the Downs apart from Toowoomba clubs will be there,” Fidge said.
“All of our swimmers will be racing for their individual age championship trophies but there will also be points for a club trophy.”
Now halfway through the season, Fidge’s swimmers will have confidence at the major meet after successful swims last weekend in Gatton.
“There were some really pleasing swims last weekend but there are definitely some things we can work on,” he said.
“Everyone’s training really well at the moment.
“We’re doing some really hard work at the moment and getting back into the swing of things again.”
Despite training out of Allora, Fidge is known to coach several Warwick Swimming Club athletes but admits that all his swimmers have healthy rivalries.
“It’s really hard to single just one swimmer out because they’re all swimming well because they’re working together as a group to get better,” he said.
“They’re all just putting their heads down and getting ready for the last bit of the season and getting ready for the state swimming championships and Darling Downs championships in March.”
