Swinging relief
MIKE Sherriff might have a terminal illness but that isn't stopping him passing on his knowledge of the sport to grandson Shaun Jacobs.
Sherriff played in qualifying for the British Open in 1979 in an event where there were 100 automatic qualifiers and 44 who secured a spot in the qualifying tournament.
He was 45th in qualifying, missing a spot in the open by one shot.
Sherriff said during a round of social golf on the Warwick course on Sunday, he was making the most of the chance to play.
"I have terminal lung cancer and walking the course did me good," he said.
At the time, he played in the qualifying event for the British Open, Sherriff was an amateur from Victoria.
He was in the Victorian junior team for five years playing with Jack Newton, Roger Davis and Bob Shearer who all became professionals.
In recent years, Sherriff has lived on the Darling Downs at Allora, Warwick and now Toowoomba.
He was at the Warwick Golf Club on Sunday for a round with his grandson Shaun Jacobs, son-in-law Shane Pullen and friend Ian Angus.
"This is the first round for Shaun," he said.
Sherriff has won championships at seven different clubs.
Past Warwick club captain Stuart Wade has played some rounds with Sherriff and said he enjoyed watching a player who had competed overseas.
"He played a par round and you could see he was an excellent golfer," Wade said.
