T20 suits the Digglers and they want more next year

CRICKET: T20 cricket is a winner everywhere from the Gabba in Brisbane to Slade Park in Warwick and The Furnace in Perth.

The crowds love the Big Bash League for men and women and in Warwick cricket, one team reckons they wouldn't be playing now if it wasn't for T20 cricket.

While Warwick cricket moved to a T20 format in the pre BBL days, Digglers just can't get enough of the shorter form of the game. At the weekend, Digglers won a second successive social competition in their 20th year in the annual carnival.

"We just play for fun, most of our team are in their late 30s and early 40s and wouldn't be playing if it wasn't T20,” this year's captain Darren Costello said.

They first played when it was 50-overs a side.

Costello and Andrew Boal have played in all 20 carnivals and Craig Hempel, Scott Hempel and Adam Fowler in 19. Costello and Hempel share the captaincy but with Craig unavailable this year, Costello took on the role.

In the social final victory against Hurricanes Elite, Costello and Steve Gander put on a winning partnership of one to secure a good two-wicket victory.

"We ran well between wickets,” Costello said.

One-run partnerships are just as important as bigger ones for a team which treats finals like every other game.

Bowlers are allowed to deliver four overs in T20 but with the Digglers, everyone bowls two overs and in the case of the wicket-keeper, two share the role and bowl one over each.

Costello said the inclusion of Dion Galloway from Killarney had been a bonus in the past two years.

Galloway was player of the carnival in 2016 and again one of the best this year with a 90 off 27 balls.

As for the future, second-generation players are starting to eye off a carnival appearance.

"Dylan Ready and Ben Fischer are our two second-generation players who will debut in the next couple of years,” Costello said.

The Digglers team started as the Tennis Chargers in a Super Eight competition in Warwick.
