Take a good look at this pavilion, it's about to change
IF YOU'RE enjoying the sunshine at the Allora Show today, be sure to take some extra time when wandering around the Ernie Young Poultry Pavilion.
The 30-year-old pavilion is about to go through a major extension after the Southern Downs Poultry Club Allora received $34,400 in funding through the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants.
Club president Leanne Doepel said she let out a big "yes" when she listened to the message last Thursday telling her the exciting news.
"I've even kept the phone message," she said.
"It's hard with a small number of members to raise that kind of money."
The money is going to be spent on adding a bay on either end of the existing pavilion.
One side will hold more cages while the other will be a member's meeting room where trophies and other materials will be kept.
The floor of the pavilion will also be cemented and electric lighting will be installed.
"We're going to have a better base for putting shows on," Mrs Doepel said.
Mrs Doepel hopes it will also allow the next generation to get more involved in the club, as one of the judges at Allora Show offered to hold a junior seminar.
"We'd have the area for him to show the kids how to wash a bird and prepare it for a show," Mrs Doepel said.
"Poultry's a good thing for kids to get into, it's not a big costs and you keep the birds in cages so they don't take up a lot of room."
Mrs Doepel said the club was getting started on gathering quotes for the work right away, but didn't think it would be fully complete in time for this show season.
The club will host their annual auction, young bird show and annual show in the coming months.
But Mrs Doepel said the expansion would be ready for the Allora Show next year.
"It's better to get in and get it done as quickly as we can," she said.
