Hockey teams take on Toowoomba
TONI Cox, Troy March and Gary Millard are playing a role in taking three Warwick hockey teams to play in the Toowoomba competition this season.
A Warwick Panthers ladies team will play in A3 on Sunday afternoons on one of the two turf fields in Toowoomba.
Cox is the team organiser and said the move to Toowoomba was to keep players interested in playing on turf involved in the game while Warwick doesn’t have a synthetic (turf) surface after the devastating flood.
“It is a bit of a challenge to play in Toowoomba and players can get experience they can hopefully bring back to their games in Warwick,” she said.
March is a former Queensland Blades Australian Hockey League player and is captain of a men’s team which will play in the A2 competition each Friday night.
Last year, Warwick fielded a veterans team in Toowoomba and that is happening in 2011 under the leadership of Gary Millard.
Cox said the Warwick men’s, ladies’ and junior competitions would be played on grass at Queen’s Park each Saturday.
The Toowoomba Hockey Association has extended the hand of friendship to their flood-ravaged Warwick counterparts in 2011.
Hockey committee chairman Peter Gilbar feels for the Warwick hockey community and says Toowoomba Hockey is happy to have the teams on board this season.
He is also hoping Warwick Hockey can get back on its feet quickly.
“They really have a terrible situation. Their water-based field is an absolute mess so in the interim we’re more than (happy) to help them out with letting those two teams in the competition,” Gilbar said.
“We’ll accommodate them for as long as they need it but hopefully they’ll be back up and running next year.”
Players keen to play club hockey in Warwick are welcome to sign up at Queen’s Park from 2pm tomorrow and play some hockey. There is no charge for the first two weeks.
