Taking stock of the issues with council

YVE Stocks has signed her last contracts and hung up her keys as a real estate agent as she prepares for her second run as a councillor candidate.

Setting up office in the heart of town, Ms Stocks is ready for two months of campaigning.

After moving to Warwick in 2003, the passionate tourism advocate threw herself into the community.

In 2012 she ran stood as a councillor candidate, finishing 10th with 4.65% of the vote (6803 votes).

For the past four years Ms Stocks has watched on in interest and now she's determined to make a difference.

Tourism and economic development are at the top of her list of priorities.

Ms Stocks said in her role as a real estate agent, she had seen first-hand the struggle of developers.

"I have seen so many developers frustrated at every turn - they end up going somewhere else to set up where they are welcomed with open arms," she said.

"The council needs to be more receptive to entrepreneurial ideas - innovation is key."

As well as supporting the Cherrabah Resort and chicken farm developments, Ms Stocks said she believed nobody else should build on the flood plain.

Tourism is at the heart of Ms Stock's life.

Not only does she run the Pitstop Lodge B&B, she's also a member of Southern Queensland Country Tourism and Destination Southern Downs.

Ms Stocks said she would like to see more tourism dollars spent in the region.

"Every dollar left by a visitor to the region, is outside money coming in," she said.

"This helps every business in turn."

Boosting sports tourism, increasing welcome signage and making the region RV friendly were key issues, according to Ms Stocks.

On the financial front, Ms Stocks said the new council needed to be realistic on rates.

She stated she believed rates should rise in line with CPI and not at rates such as 4%.

The Southern Downs is near and dear to Ms Stocks, with a long connection through the Ariel, Mundey and Siebenhausen families in Killarney and Warwick.

In her 13 years in Warwick, Ms Stocks has actively served with the Warwick Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Warwick.

She is also an active competitor in motor racing in the region, including race meets at Morgan Park Raceway and the Leyburn Sprints.

Ms Stocks is welcoming people to her campaign office on the corner of Palmerin and Grafton Sts, opposite the Warwick Post Office.

She will be hosting a launch on Thursday night at the office from 5.30pm.
