POSTIE by weekday, speed demon by weekend.

Tammy Goldthorpe may keep her need for speed in check during her delivery run for Australia Post, but it's another thing altogether after work.

The 34-year-old will compete in the modified bike division at this weekend's Winternationals event at Willowbank Raceway.

Her modified Suzuki GSXR1000 motorcycle will reach 240kmh down the Willowbank quarter mile track, but without a crash in 10 years of racing, Goldthorpe holds no fears when lining up for a run.

"I actually think it's a lot more dangerous riding the postie bike," she said. "Avoiding cars, even dogs, but here it's so well organised, it's very safe."

Goldthorpe is a past track champion in the Modified Bike division at Willowbank Raceway and admits she always had a need for speed.

"I was always a bit of a tomboy," she said. "I ride the bike around town, but this is the only place you can use it for what it is designed to do."

The mum of one is not the only postie to get her kicks at the drag racing track.

She said there must be something about delivering the post that breeds good drag racers.

"There were four posties in the top eight of the street earlier this year," she said. "So maybe the skills do cross over."

While many in the sport spend tens of thousands of dollars a year preparing, maintaining and racing their bikes or cars, Goldthorpe and partner Denis Ryan enjoy a more casual approach to the sport.

Goldthorpe's bike is street registered and doubles as her daily form of transport around the streets of Ipswich.

Ryan said that rather than a team of professional mechanics lining up to keep her on the road, their approach was a lot more relaxed.

"I think she put $10 worth of fuel in it yesterday," Ryan said.

"That should get her through the weekend."

"Drag racing is our hobby," Goldthorpe said.

"We just come for some good competition and to meet some great people."
