UPDATE: A man has passed away in hospital tonight following a serious traffic crash at Chatsworth this afternoon.

Initial investigations suggest around 1.30pm a tanker and car travelling in the opposite direction have collided on the Bruce Highway.

The driver of the vehicle, a 52-year-old interstate man, was transported to Royal Brisbane Hospital but passed away tonight as a result of his injuries.

The Highway was closed in both direction for several hours but has since re-opened.

Forensic Crash Unit continues to investigate.

EARLIER: POLICE are investigating a serious, two-vehicle traffic crash which occurred earlier today in Chatsworth.

At around 1.30pm a tanker carrying recycled cooking oil and a car travelling in the opposite direction collided on the Bruce Highway.

The collision caused the tanker to overturn, blocking both northbound and southbound lanes of the highway, which remains closed.

The truck driver received minor injuries during the crash however the driver of the sedan suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital for treatment.

Investigations are continuing and a clean-up of the oil spill is underway.
