Taxing task for first-timers

FILLING out a tax form for the first time can be tricky and daunting, especially if you are not really sure what you are entitled to claim.

Globe Accounting director Pauline Pickering said making the trip to see a tax agent was one way to ensure you received everything for which you were entitled.

"You can fill out your tax return online, but I recommend that people who have not filled one out before see a tax agent once so they know what they can and can't claim," she said.

"For people who have a nine-to-five job, who don't spend any money related to their work, then online is just fine."

Ms Pickering said there was a very simple formula to help determine what you can and cannot claim.

"It doesn't matter what job you do or what industry you are in, whatever money you spend that is directly related to your job and you making an income may be tax deductible in some shape or form such as tools, uniforms, mobile phones and protective clothing.

"You need to collect receipts from any money you have spent that relates to you earning an income. If you are not sure, still keep it."
