TC Alfred forms in Gulf of Carpentaria

TROPICAL cyclone Alfred has formed offshore in the Gulf of Carpentaria this morning.

The cyclone formed just after 8am and is expected to track south east throughout today.

Meteorologist Adam Blazak said the category 1 cyclone is about 160km north east of Borroloola in the Northern Territory.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred has formed in the Gulf of Carpentaria and will cause intense rain and storms on the Queensland side of the NT border.

"We're forecasting it to move in a south easterly direction and weaken tomorrow before making landfall on the Northern Territory side of the border," he said.

Mr Blazak said Alfred would likely be downgraded to a tropical low by the time it hits land.

"Strong winds in the upper atmosphere will prohibit the development of the cyclone any further.

"Systems in the gulf don't really have much room to build up .. they don't get much of a chance before they hit land," he said.

Mr Blazak said residents between Burketown and Doomadgee should prepare for intense rain as the low moves south.

"There will be plenty of showers, storms and wind for the Queensland side of the border, we do have a severe weather warning still in place for parts of the Gulf country," he said.

Meanwhile in Queensland's south east steady temperatures in the low 30s are expected throughout the week.

"We expect to see south easterly winds start to strengthen this week, that will keep temperatures reasonably moderated.

"It's still going to reach 30 most days with maybe the odd shower from Wednesday but it's certainly still going to be Summer conditions for a while yet," Mr Blazak said.
