Talented team ready to fire up for 2013 netball season
IT'S here … the official start of our season and we are itching to get back on the netball court.
On Tuesday, the Mission Queensland Firebirds had our season launch and players were presented with our uniforms, ready for Sunday when we take on the Southern Steel at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 11.10am.
I mentioned in my speech at the launch that, when I returned from my honeymoon, it was amazing to see six new faces - that is, half the team - was new to me. Plus, there were six familiar faces.
This was both daunting and exciting. During pre-season I have grown to know all the girls and I am so proud to be playing with them and to be captaining them in 2013.
Also, pre-season has been a time for us to learn how to play together as a team.
That might sound strange but we come together with a set of skills and, while we play the same game, we need to learn each other's strengths and how we can support each other.
Sunday is also exciting because we have the battle of the Jamaican Sunshine Girls.
Our wonderful Firebird, Romelda Aiken, who stands tall at 1.96cm, will be overshadowed by the Southern Steel's towering shooter, Jhaniele Fowler, at 1.98cm. And you thought I was tall at 185cm.
I hope we see you on Sunday; support does make all the difference.
I also hope when I write next week, I can tell you about our victorious first game of the season.
Most of all, I know I will be able to tell you how great it was to play with such a great bunch of talented young and experienced Queenslanders.
