Teen in push to bring huge festival to Warwick
A PASSION for music and a hunger to see a little excitement in the Rose City is behind a Warwick young woman's push to bring one of the country's most popular touring music festivals to town.
17-year-old Cara Jarrett has her heart set on seeing the Triple J One Night Stand festival in Warwick and wants the community to jump behind the idea.
"This is something I've wanted to see happen here for ages,” she said.
"People are always commenting that there's not much for young people to do in Warwick, and they're right, there isn't.
"This would only be one night, but it would be unforgettable.”
Miss Jarrett said Warwick live music scene needed a little shot in the arm.
"There's hardly anything and that's a real shame, because I know there's a lot of people in town who love live music,” she said.
"You have to travel to Toowoomba, Brisbane and Byron to see bands. I think it's time Warwick saw something big like this.”
Each year, after sifting through hundreds of applications, Triple J select one town for the annual concert.
So far, Geraldton, Mt Isa and Cowra, among others, have all had a turn and in 2012, 15,000 fans had a ball at a rain-soaked One Night Stand in Dalby.
With applications for 2018 due next week Miss Jarrett has put one together for Warwick as well as a petition to show the Rose City has the support to carry a show of this size.
Miss Jarrett has also approached Southern Downs Regional Council, the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society - who have offered the Warwick Showgrounds as a possible venue - and headspace who have all thrown their support behind the venture.
Headspace Warwick manager Travis Maguire said he was backing Cara 100percent.
"She's a very proactive young woman,” he said.
"It would be so huge for Warwick - people travel halfway across the country for these events every year.
"We're more than happy to support her however she needs.”
