Teenage driver racing towards Top Fuels

MOTORSPORT: Following in her father's footsteps, 19-year-old Emily Williams has her eyes set on clocking top speeds in her dragster.

The Dalby teenager has been behind the wheel of her rear engine dragster for four years and has taken out numerous titles along the way.

Hoping to take home another top qualifier at Morgan Park today, Williams is already planning for international success.

"My goal is to compete at Top Fuel in both Australia and the United States,” she said.

Entered in the Modified Dragster bracket, Williams can reach speeds of 155mph.

"I'm going pretty fast at the moment and in a Top Fuel dragster I could do double what I'm doing now,” she said.

"I'm definitely the speed demon of the family.”

Together with her sister, Chloe Williams, the family built the unique dragster together to get the girls on the track.

"I know every nook and cranny of it,” Williams said.

Heading out to races every weekend, during the week she's helping out the family business fixing cars and pushing paper.

"I could be doing anything, from office to work to performance handling,” Williams said.

"But behind the wheel is where I prefer to be.”

Being the only girl on the track doesn't seem to bother the teenager.

"When you win against the boys it's such a good feeling, showing them what you can do,” Williams said.

"There is a handful of girls who race and we're very supportive of each other.”

Seeing a few minor crashes on the strip today, Williams knows the risk of the sport.

"We all go in knowing what could happen, it's just abut how well your reaction time is and knowing what to do in those situations,” she said.

Part of the race is the mental preparation, Williams said.

"I always need to be focussed before a race, I can't have too many people around me,” she said.

Today's Six Banger Nationals meeting had over 100 cars registered to race across six brackets.
