Teenage drivers take to the track for start of season
MOTOR RACING: Matt Clift will be joined by his son Tom and nephew Adam Baguley in this weekend's round 1 for A series drivers in the Queensland Super Sprints Championships at Morgan Park Raceway.
Racing all day Saturday and to early afternoon Sunday.
Matt will run his Mazda RX2 while Tom and Adam, both 15, will be in Toyota Corollas.
Tom Clift will compete in his second sprint season and Adam Baguley will debut on the track.
This weekend, Tom will run a KE20 Corolla and Adam will be in a KE55 Corolla.
"I can't wait for the weekend," Tom said.
"We will make some more adjustments to the car and I hope to be faster than last year," he said.
At this stage, his motor racing is just sprints, rather than head to head racing as in the CAMS Queensland Motor Racing Championships at Morgan Park.
"Maybe one day, I will compete in championship racing," he said.
He and his father, Matt, built his racing car from three rusted out shells.
"My cousin, Adam, is in the sprints for the first time and I will be encouraging him just to feel comfortable in the car this weekend," Tom said.
Matt is preparing six of the A series sprint cars at his business Morgan Park Performance for this weekend's meeting.
One car he prepares is a Datsun 1200 which Joh Forbes and Steve Gander will both drive this weekend.
Matt said the sprints were a great opportunity for some drivers to test cars before round 1 of the Queensland championships.
"Joh races her Datsun 1200 in the state championships and I race my Mazda," Matt said.
Matt said the move to three different series for the super sprints, rather than two, was good news.
"It will give the competitors more runs at each round, costs keep going up so competitors want to have more runs each weekend," he said.
"Interest is increasing in the sprints which are not as expensive as other types of motorsport.
"You can turn up in a stock standard road car and go sprint racing."
Forbes is going into her sixth year in motorsport.
"I compete for the fun and the adrenaline rush," she said.
"We have put a new motor in my car and the dyno testing under load indicates I will be driving faster."
Since starting in motor racing, Forbes said she had been encouraged by the increasing number of women moving into the sport.
"There also appears to be more junior drivers, which is great for the sport," she said.
