Telstra passwords exposed

TELSTRA has blamed a privacy breach for the disabling of internet services that's affected up to one million BigPond email users.

Telstra spokeswoman Karina Keisler said the company was made aware of a privacy breach yesterday afternoon and disabled its online billing, BigPond self-care and My Account functions on its website an hour later.

She said Telstra was investigating the problem and should have these services, including BigPond email, back online this afternoon.

"It might be considered over-cautious, but we'd rather be over-cautious than take risks with our customers' private details," Ms Keisler said.

"We're working around the clock and we're going to have the site back up as soon as possible."
