Be prepared for heat wave as temperatures are set to soar

BRACE yourselves, Warwick; things are about to heat up in a big way.

Come Wednesday, there will be more than just a few sweaty foreheads as we climb into the mid 30s and then hit 38 degrees on Thursday.

While we may not hit the 46 degree mark like our central Queensland neighbours, Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said we were in for a scorcher few days.

"The hottest air mass is remaining over central and southern Queensland but a lot of eastern Queensland is moderated by onshore winds which will be persisting for a few days," Mr Domensino said.

Today is expected to reach 32 degrees with 31 degrees tomorrow, 30 degrees Monday and Tuesday and back up to 35 on Wednesday.

"On Wednesday we're expecting a hot air mass in the Warwick region," Mr Domensino said.

"The heat will be remaining through to the end of next week and then we could see temperatures climb again next weekend.

"Beyond that it looks like the heat will persist into the beginning of the following week before we get some cooler temperatures mid week."

A severe fire warning comes with the heightened temperatures and the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has renewed calls for south west Queensland residents to remain vigilant with heightened fire danger expected across the weekend.

QFRS South West Region acting manager for rural operations Col Neal said firefighters were monitoring conditions closely, but reminded residents prevention was key.

"The combination of strong winds, high temperatures and low relative humidity will make it very difficult to contain vegetation fires, so we're asking residents to take extra care and be alert."

Warwick fireman Michael Coombes urged Southern Downs residents to remember the following safety tips this fire season.

Be prepared

  • Clean your gutters
  • Have no rubbish stacked next tot he house
  • No open fires
  • Ensure your grass is mown around your home
  • Ensure trees near your house are not dangerous
  • Do not light a fire unless you have a permit from your local fire brigade
  • Stay hydrated and out of the sun in peak heat times.
