Ten buckles handed out at barrel racing weekend

THE Warwick Barrel Racing Gold Buckle Series was held at the weekend and the winners came from as far as Western Australia and Singleton in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.

Eight riders won buckles in the Australian Barrel Horse Association event over two days at the Warwick Showgrounds.

Wandoan winner

ONE of the winners was Rachel Little from Wandoan.

She won the 1D buckle in the open on Miracle Fame in an event where riders could compete on as many different horses as they wished.

Little said the Warwick Showgrounds. arena was great for the event.

"It was a well-run barrel race,” she said.

"I will be back for the other three series rounds this year.”

Singleton winner

PAUL Ralston headed from Singleton to Warwick for the first time as a barrel racer at the weekend and ended up winning the classic buckle for four, five and six-year-old horses.

He was riding CK Cha Cha, a five-year-old mare bred by Christine Hooke and owned by Laura Gardner.

"I train and ride CK for Laura,” he said.

While barrel racing events are more traditionally contested by women, especially in pro rodeo ranks, there were some men competing in Warwick at the weekend.

Ralston competes most weekends on different horses but only brought one horse to Warwick.

It only takes one horse to win.

Halls Creek winner

BROOKE Taylor travelled from Halls Creek in Western Australia to barrel race at the weekend.

She was in town with her father, Tony Taylor, who runs a civil contracting business in the west.

"We flew over and bought Brooke's new horse Sir Rocko from Angus Mitchell, of Roma,” he said.

Brooke recently borrowed the horse to finish 5th in the National Rodeo Council finals at Dalby. On her second trip over to ride Sir Rocko at the weekend, she won the 11 years and under buckle in the barrel racing in Warwick.

The family has flown home but Sir Rocko will stay in Queensland. There is a junior rodeo for Brooke in Charters Towers in early March.
